We Bought a Zoo (2011)Directed by: Cameron Crowe Written by: Benjamin Mee (book), Cameron Crowe, Aline Brosh McKenna (screenplay) Starring: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Colin Ford, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, Elle Fanning
Okay…so, I am admittedly, a huge Cameron Crowe fan - I love his films, and yes, even Elizabethtown. Thankfully, this movie will be part of that canon that I enjoyed watching , but it’s definitely not his strongest work. First of all, the whole idea of buying a zoo is a tad silly, and as someone who cares about animals, it’s a little bothersome that it makes running a zoo look so damn easy. With that aside, I think it’s a perfectly fine film, with okay acting, manipulative emotional character arcs. It’s everything that an enjoyable conventional movie should be - and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s very tame, and not trying to throw anything at you that you don’t already expect. Granted, because it’s Damon taking the lead, it’s completely watchable, and you don’t quite mind the Jonsi score telling you when it’s time to cry. A welcome emotional flick that I found to be quite adorable!
My rating: 3.5/5
